Disclaimer: This partnership is part of the Warm Home Discount industry initiatives scheme for the year 2023-2024 to deliver Tru Energy’s obligations as required by the energy regulator, Ofgem. The eligible customers are not guaranteed to receive the fund disbursements as it is subject to availability.

2023 has provided it’s ups and downs for everyone in the energy industry and despite a tough year operationally TruEnergy is proud to announce that we have exceeded our target installations for electricity smart metering by 165%!

Under sections 44A and 38A of the Electricity and Gas Supply Licence Conditions, all suppliers are required to forecast and report on the progress of their smart metering rollouts. For 2023 Tru’s targets were to install at least 341 Electricity and 683 Gas SMETS 2 Smart Meters.

We overachieved on the electricity side, installing a grand total of 565 Electricity Smart meters across the UK.

Unfortunately we fell short of the gas meter installation target by 35%, only installing a total of 432 Gas smart meters. There was great effort by the team but unfortunately, we couldn’t quite meet the target for this year.

Looking ahead to 2024

We always strive for excellence and with some major changes to our strategy moving into 2024 including a complete overhaul of the bookings process, forecasting and major system changes, we are confident we can beat the targets for the next calendar year and not see any shortfall in installations.

It will be a challenge, but one we will embrace with gusto!

TruEnergy’s targets as agreed with Ofgem for the coming year are to install at least 608 Electricity and 657 Gas SMETS 2 Smart meters.

As our portfolio expands, so does our appetite to install smart meters in any property we can, so we look forward to installing a brand-new smart meter in your home or business too!

This new government scheme, which replaces the previous Energy Bill Relief Scheme (EBRS), will run for 12 months from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024.

The scheme will be available to everyone on a non-domestic energy supply contract with a licensed energy supplier including:

  • businesses
  • voluntary sector organisations, such as charities
  • public sector organisations such as schools, hospitals and care homes

who are:

  • on existing fixed price contracts that were agreed on or after 1 December 2021
  • signing new fixed-price contracts
  • on deemed/out of contract or variable tariffs, or
  • on flexible purchase (or similar) contracts
  • on variable ‘Day Ahead Index’ (DAI) tariffs (Northern Ireland scheme only)

Comparable support will be extended to non-domestic energy customers who receive gas or electricity delivered over public networks from non-licensed providers.

Eligible non-domestic customers will receive a per-unit discount to their energy bills during the 12-month period from April 2023 to March 2024. This is subject to a maximum discount. The relative discount will be applied if wholesale prices are above a certain price threshold. For most non-domestic energy users in Great Britain and Northern Ireland these threshold prices and maximum discounts have been set at:

  • electricity – up to £19.61 per megawatt hour (MWh) with a price threshold of £302 per MWh.
  • gas – up to £6.97 per megawatt hour (MWh) with a price threshold of £107 per MWh

The discount is calculated as the difference between the wholesale price associated with an energy contract and the price threshold. The discount is phased in when the contract’s wholesale price exceeds the floor price, until the total discount per MWh reaches the maximum discount for that fuel. The discount is only applied to the wholesale element of the bill and therefore the final per unit price paid by non-domestic customers will differ as it includes other costs such as network charges and operating costs.

There are two further elements to the scheme, and eligible customers will need to register through the provided links to access this support:

  • The Energy and Trade Intensive Industries (ETII) discount will provide a higher level of support to businesses and organisations in eligible sectors – you will need to register to get this support, TruEnergy is not determining eligibility for a larger discount
  • The Heat Network discount will provide a higher level of support to heat networks with domestic end consumers – you need to register to get this support, TruEnergy is not determining eligibility for a larger discount

The TruEnergy and Huddle teams recently held a bake sale to raise funds for Syria and Turkiye following the earthquake. The event was a success, with an impressive £510 raised from the bake sale and a further £2000 donated by TruEnergy and Huddle. The teams worked tirelessly to prepare their homemade treats, and raised awareness of the ongoing need for aid. The money raised will go directly to aid organisations working to support those affected by the disasters. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference, and the bake sale was a reminder of the power of community and working towards a common goal.

It has been a great year for TruEnergy’s metering department, having become a live user of the DCC smart network, we began our rollout of SMETS2 meters at the beginning of Q2 this year to great effect for our customers.

Under sections 44A and 38A of the Electricity and Gas Supply Licence Conditions, all suppliers are required to forecast and report on the progress of their smart metering rollouts. As part of this reporting, it gives us great pleasure to announce that not only have we met the current Ofgem targets, we have exceeded our targets by over 300%!

TruEnergy’s target as agreed with Ofgem was to install at least 159 electricity and 186 gas SMETS2 smart meters by 31/12/2022.

In total during 2022, TruEnergy installed 768 electricity & 611 gas SMETS2 meters.

This was over and above even our internal targets for smart meter installations of 250 meters of each type.

We would like to extend our thanks to our meter operator partners AES Metering for making this possible.

Looking ahead to 2023

As we move into the new year we are now looking ahead to another great year for our smart meter rollout. We have been diligently planning our strategy to maintain our high performance in this area. This includes agreeing to a new forecast with Ofgem for 2023.

TruEnergy’s target as agreed with Ofgem for this coming year is to install at least 341 electricity & 683 gas SMETS2 meters.

With our previous success in this area, we are confident our metering specialists are up to the challenge and are looking forward to making significant progress with our smart metering rollout into 2023.

This government scheme will provide energy bill relief for all non-domestic customers in Great Britain, with discounts applying initially for the period between 1 October 2022 and 31 March 2023, after which further support will be subject to a review by HM Government. Those eligible for the EBRS include:

  • businesses
  • voluntary sector organisations, such as charities
  • public sector organisations such as schools, hospitals and care homes

Who are:

  • on existing fixed price contracts that were agreed on or after 1 December 2021
  • signing new fixed-price contracts
  • on deemed/out-of-contract or variable tariffs
  • on flexible purchase or similar contract

The relief for energy bills will apply to gas and electricity unit prices. For non-domestic customers, the unit price is as below:

  • £211 per megawatt hour (MWh) for electricity
  • £75 per MWh for gas

If you are a business or non-domestic customer of TruEnergy, we will apply the reduction to the bills of eligible customers ourselves, with no action required for the end user. The discount will be applied in pence per kilowatt hour (kWh).

If you have signed a fixed business contract effective on or after 1 December 2021, you are eligible for the government Energy Bill Relief Scheme. The discount applied to a unit rate will be a difference between Reference Wholesale Price and Government Support Price. The Reference Wholesale Price is determined by the government daily and will not change. If your fixed tariff is based on wholesale prices below the government-supported price, you will not be eligible for support.

If you are on a variable tariff, you will get the reduction subject to the ‘maximum discount’. The maximum discount, calculated by the government and set on 30 September 2022, is £345 per MWh for electricity and £91 per MWh for gas.

If you are on a day and night tariff, your discount will be calculated on a weighted volume basis. Here are the steps on how we will achieve this:

  1. A volume-weighted tariff will be calculated to get a single tariff from day and night tariffs based on:
    a. 58% and 42% proportion for NHH meter points;
    b. Historical average proportion for HH meter points;
  2. A discount will be applied to a volume-weighted single tariff;
  3. If the post-discount weighted single tariff does not reach the Government Support Price, then the discount amount will be multiplied by the total actual or estimated consumption for the month – that will be the £ discount applied to your bill;
  4. If the post-discount weighted single tariff does reach the Government Support Price, then the discount amount will be reduced up to the Government Support Price. After that, a reduced discount will be multiplied by the total actual or estimated consumption for the month – that will be the £ discount applied to your bill.

After many months of diligent work behind the scenes at TruEnergy, it gives us all immense pleasure to announce that we are live on the SMETS2 DCC network!

The SMETS2 DCC network is the smart network shared across all suppliers in the UK and allows for all first and second smart meters currently installed today to communicate with the respective supplier to the property. Running on a 3G network much like your phone, this allows smart meters to send and receive data with a supplier’s systems, and allows us to collect meter readings, to top up smart prepayment meters, and fix problems completely remotely.

This will hugely impact all aspects of our company and how we do things, along with streamlining and improving our service to our customers.

What does this mean for me?

  • If you have a newer generation smart meter installed by another supplier, we will soon be able to collect readings remotely and have much more control over the functions on the meter.
  • We will be able to send messages to the meter and collect far more information including the current signal strength in your area in case of any outages to the smart system.
  • We will be able to continue using smart data for insights and analysis and help you keep your bills low and streamline your portfolio’s usage.
  • We will be rolling out SMETS2 meter installations in the next few weeks where we will be engaging with landlords, calling tenants, and working with you to upgrade your metering systems, for free, to the newest and best versions available.
  • SMETS2 meters work with all suppliers across the country, so once the meters are installed and connected, they will not lose connection even when a property switches to a different supplier.

Installations:

  • In accordance with the standard supplier license conditions laid out by Ofgem, TruEnergy now has a public target of the number of SMETS2 Smart Meters we will be installing in 2022.
  • TruEnergy’s target as agreed Ofgem is to install at least 159 electricity and 186 gas SMETS2 smart meters by 31/12/2022.
  • TruEnergy’s target is to install a smart meter in as many properties as we can, and ultimately we want to install a smart meter for 100% of properties supplied by TruEnergy. Our internal targets, therefore, are to install at least 250 electricity and 250 gas SMETS2 smart meters by the end of the year.

Smart for business:

  • One of the most exciting aspects of our SMETS2 rollout is now our ability to service smart meters for our industrial electricity sites.
  • With our smart meter rollout we will also be offering 3-phase smart meters for your office or business.
  • We understand that running your business to maximal efficiency is your number one priority, so having a smart meter installed will provide some useful tools to help with this.
  • You will never receive any estimated bills, so gone are the days of overestimated bills which are redone with multiple credits, invoices, and headaches for your finance team.
  • With data insights we can work together to cut down your business’s environmental impact and expenditure on bills through energy savings tips and advice.
  • Smart metering unlocks a world of new tariffs and billing options.
  • When you have a smart meter installed, we can predict much more accurately your daily demand of electricity – and using this then make sure we provide you with energy from renewable sources when you need it, helping us all to achieve net zero.

If you have any queries on smart meters or what they can do for you, or to book in your free smart meter installation today, then please contact our dedicated team at smartmeters@truenergy.co.uk.

With energy costs soaring and the April price cap increase looming, the TruEnergy Trust has been established to help all TruEnergy customers facing fuel poverty. Further details for the Trust can be found on their landing page here.

The pace of smart meter rollouts has slowed slightly due to Covid restrictions but is still impressive. TruEnergy managed to install over 70% of its domestic supplies with a smart meter last year, giving our customers superior billing accuracy.
